Sounds of Splendour on-sale-now

Experience the magic of the season with SOUNDS OF SPLENDOUR — a Christmas concert of classical and living composers, presented by the Hamilton Civic Choir!

The concert centers around the Southern Hemisphere premiere of Bob Chilcott’s moving multi-work Mary, Mother, a sequence of six carols that explores the role of Mary in the Christmas story and focuses on her human experience within a story of the divine. The New Zealand debut of this piece will be accompanied by harpist Anna Christensen who has played extensively overseas and as principal harpist for NZSO — she now lives and teaches in Wellington — and Auckland-based organist Soomin Kim.

Other highlights of the evening include the jubilant Jauchzet, Frohlocket! of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and Handel’s radiant And the Glory of the Lord from Messiah, to modern gems like John Rutter’s Angels’ Carol, which perfectly captures the sense of wonder and celebration at the heart of the Christmas story. Dan Forrest’s tender piece In the Bleak Midwinter will be performed by the female choristers.

Cristian Grases’ lively arrangement of Mi Burrito Sabanero (“My Little Donkey from the Savannah”), which is one of the most beloved Christmas songs from Venezuela and sung from the perspective of a child riding a donkey on the way to Bethlehem, has become a joyful part of Latin American Christmas celebrations.

This concert promises music of joy, warmth, and wonder for the whole family this Christmas season. Support your local performing arts and join us for SOUNDS OF SPLENDOUR!
