Hamilton Civic Choir - From Hamilton to New York

Hamilton Civic Choir kick off their 2018 concert programme with a regional tour entitled “From Hamilton to New York” where they will be performing a variety of musical bonanza from acclaimed international composers.

This tour serves as an extension of the choir’s impending international tour following a call from Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) inviting them to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York in April this year. And where better to perform than in Te Awamutu and Cambridge, where the choir’s New York tour was first announced.

For this concert, MD Timothy Carpenter draws his inspiration from Fenno-Scandinavian composers such as Carl Neilsen, Jaakko Mäntyjärvi and Ola Gjeilo. It was Gjeilo’s Ubi Caritas which first led Hamilton Civic Choir to be discovered by DCINY, and Carpenter says that it was the allure of the Nordic treatment of tonality that inspired him to conceive this repertoire.

The repertoire includes an array of works taking wing from New Zealand to America via Scandinavia and Great Britain. From New Zealander Child’s Salve Regina to Mantyjarvi’s Four Shakespeare Songs through to Purcell’s Hear My Prayer and Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium, Hamilton Civic Choir look set to delight their audiences with a wide range of music representing a wide time scale and geography of composers.
